Audi A6 with 480,000 km: Essential Engine Repairs and Emissions Fix
A 2005 Audi A6 with over 480,000 kilometers on the odometer recently came in for service. The car required engine maintenance and a solution for failed emissions, as it did not pass the inspection due to excessive exhaust emissions.
Dashboard Overview
As shown in the photos, the dashboard reveals a total mileage exceeding 480,000 km. The instrument cluster features six round gauges arranged symmetrically:
- Left to right: Engine oil temperature, engine RPM, coolant temperature, fuel level, speedometer, and battery voltage.
- Additional displays: The left main gauge shows the time, the center shows the outside temperature, and the right main gauge shows the total mileage.

Engine Diagnosis and Repairs
Computer diagnostics detected issues with the intake and exhaust timing. Specifically:
- Left-side timing chain and tensioner needed replacement.
- The right-side exhaust camshaft gear is connected to the timing belt. The belt itself does not need replacement but must be removed for repair.
Step 1: Remove the intake and exhaust camshafts and the timing tensioner assembly.
Once removed, the bottom of the camshaft shows hydraulic lifters.
Step 2: Replace worn parts.
- The old intake and exhaust camshaft, chain, and tensioner were replaced.
- New hydraulic lifters and a new timing chain were installed.
After over two hours of installation, the mechanic started the engine and ran a computer check. The original fault had disappeared, successfully resolving the engine timing issue.

Emissions Issue and Catalytic Converter Cleaning
The car still failed the emissions inspection due to a severely clogged catalytic converter.
- The catalytic converter was removed and soaked for cleaning.
- After cleaning, the internal channels of the converter were mostly unobstructed.
Even after reinstalling the cleaned catalytic converter, the exhaust odor remained unpleasant. Upon inspecting the spark plugs, the combustion color was abnormal.
The mechanic recommended draining all fuel from the tank and refueling with 95-octane gasoline to improve emissions and pass the inspection. After approval from the car owner:
- A tube was connected to the engine’s fuel return line, and the old fuel was drained into a large metal container.
- Once drained, the fuel was partially returned to the tank, and the car was refueled at a gas station to ensure clean fuel.

Final Results
After these repairs, the Audi A6 successfully passed the emissions test. All necessary repairs were completed, and no further issues were reported.
